Zi Wei Dou Shu: a guide to palaces, stars and transformations
Zi Wei Dou Shu is a traditional Chinese birth-chart system organized around twelve palaces and named stars. Sometimes called Purple Star Astrology, it uses a different structure from BaZi and from Western natal astrology. Its star names belong to a traditional symbolic framework; a chart is not a clinical assessment or proof that your future has already been decided.

What do the twelve palaces represent?
The palaces organize themes such as self, siblings, partnership, children, resources, health, movement, friendships, work, home, inner life and parents. Translations vary between schools. Read the labels in their historical context rather than treating them as literal descriptions of a modern household. A health-related palace cannot diagnose an illness, and a partnership palace cannot establish whether a relationship is safe or compatible.
Why one star is not a complete reading
Major stars offer an entry point, while supporting stars, relationships between palaces and transformations add context. Lu, Quan, Ke and Ji are commonly called the Four Transformations. They should not be reduced to a universal good-versus-bad score. In particular, a challenging name is not evidence that something harmful will happen. A useful explanation should show how an interpretation was reached and leave room for disagreement.
Check the birth details and calculation assumptions
Before comparing charts, verify the recorded date, birth time and calendar conversion. Schools may differ in their handling of leap months, time adjustment and transformation rules. A difference between two charts may come from those assumptions rather than a difference in personal insight. If the time is approximate, ask which parts of the chart could change and keep that uncertainty visible in any interpretation.
Bring a symbolic reading back to lived experience
Choose one statement and find an example where it fits, then an example where it does not. If a reading raises a work or relationship theme, explore the real circumstances directly. PsyFate explains Zi Wei Dou Shu and BaZi separately before comparing themes. Similar language across two traditions does not validate either system scientifically, and neither should replace your own choices or a qualified professional’s assessment.
Common questions
Is Zi Wei Dou Shu the same as Western astrology?
No. The systems use different calculations, symbols and interpretive traditions. Their palaces and houses are not interchangeable.
Can a life-palace star tell me who I am?
It can introduce a traditional interpretation, but it cannot establish your identity. Personal history, current relationships and changing circumstances also matter.
